Inside HSCA examines new members of the 113th Congress who have a background in healthcare or who could have an impact on the supply chain.

Michelle Lujan Grisham, former county commissioner and healthcare consultant, defeated former Republican state Rep. Janice Arnold-Jones in New Mexico’s 1st District.

A New Mexico native, Lujan Grisham earned both her bachelor’s and law degrees from the University of New Mexico. She previously worked as the head of the New Mexico State Agency on Aging and became the first secretary of the newly created Department of Aging and Long Term Services under both Democratic and Republican administrations.

Lujan Grisham has also served as secretary of the New Mexico Department of Health. As Secretary of Health Lujan Grisham fought to require public health facilitates to meet the same standards of private sector facilities and worked to make sure every child in New Mexico had primary health care, according to her campaign website.

Lujan Grisham is also President and co-Founder of the Delta Consulting Group, a small business that provided management and consulting to organizations in the non-profit, private and public sectors. As of 2008, the Delta Consulting group had the Executive Services contract for the New Mexico Health Insurance Pool and worked to provide healthcare coverage to New Mexico residents who had no insurance.

During her campaign Lujan Grisham discussed the importance of public-private partnerships in accelerating the economy and promised to fight any efforts to restructure Medicare. She is also a firm supporter of the Medicaid expansion provision within the Affordable Care Act, which is expected to extend coverage to an additional 130,000 residents in New Mexico.

Lujan Grisham has expressed interest in joining the Oversight and Government Reform subcommittee on health care or the Energy and Commerce Committee.

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus recently announced that Lujan Grisham will serve as a whip for the Caucus during the 113th Congress.
