HSCA President Curtis Rooney today released a statement on President Obama’s FY 2013 budget, and the critical role that GPOs play in healthcare cost containment, including the billions of dollars in savings that GPOs deliver to American hospitals, to Medicare and Medicaid programs, and to American taxpayers. Rooney stated:
“Hospitals rely on their GPO partners to deliver the best products at the best value every day. The group purchasing industry looks forward to working with Congress and the Administration to drive down costs.”
Rooney also addressed the recent GAO report, “Lack of Price Transparency May Hamper Hospitals’ Ability to Be Prudent Purchasers of Implantable Medical Devices,” stating:
“We encourage Congress to examine the recent GAO report on medical device pricing secrecy and investigate whether taxpayers are receiving appropriate value from their medical device dollar. The GAO report confirmed what hospitals, their GPO partners and anyone on the front lines of patient care already know: contractual confidentiality agreements deployed by the $200 billion medical device industry may be artificially driving up healthcare costs and leaving hospitals, Medicare and Medicaid and the American taxpayer to foot the bill.”
