Yesterday, 18 small medical device manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies and distributors sent a letter to Senators Baucus and Grassley on the benefits that GPOs provide to small suppliers, and the ways in which GPOs help small businesses bring innovative products and services to market in a landscape dominated by large manufacturers. The letter reads:
“By ensuring that innovative products and services like ours make it to market, GPOs not only help grow small suppliers – they increase competition in the medical device, pharmaceutical and distribution field, lower costs for hospitals, and help ensure that patients have access to the newest, most effective treatment options.”
HIGPA President Curtis Rooney released an official statement on the letter:
“GPOs are committed to bringing hospitals the best, most innovative products at the best value, and that is why, as the GAO found in its most recent report, all GPOs have in place programs to evaluate and deliver innovative technologies to improve patient care. GPOs provide small and diversity suppliers with access to thousands of hospitals across the country, which directly enables those suppliers to build market share, create jobs and grow infrastructure and capacity.”
Blogs on Modern Healthcare and The Hill picked up on this story, as well.
